This Spring has been quite productive between tours, writing, and recording. While I’m finishing mixing the new, double album of my music, I have happily been a part of recording 3 other album projects with my good friends.

1) Eastern Blok just finished recording and mixing our 3rd group album. It should we coming out in September 2011. It features all original music by me and Goran Ivanovic.

2) Grazyna Auguscik recorded an album of all Nick Drake songs with me, John Mclean, Rob Clearfield, and Jon Deitemyer. We are still working on bringing it all together. So far, it’s been a great exploration of the moods of Nick Drake.

3) Eunice Yi-Deitemyer recorded a full length album with me, Chris Siebold, and Jon Deitemer consisting of all her original songs. This was a really fun project to be a part of. We all sing on these sure to be hits.

Flora.Fauna.Fervor. – The second album by Matt Ulery’s Loom – fulfills the desire of its leader to front a “band with a sound not only determined by the compositions and the instrumentation, but with the actual players who perform the music.” Ulery, a Chicago-based bassist and composer, adds, “This conception is why Loom has had an immediately identifiable sound, striving for maximum range of emotional depth while appealing far beyond strictly jazz listeners.”

Loom, formed in 2006, features Matt Ulery on double bass, in collaboration with Thad Franklin (trumpet and flugelhorn), Tim Haldeman (tenor sax), Rob Clearfield (accordion, Wurlitzer electric piano), Zach Brock (violin), Katie Wiegman (vibraphone) and Jon Deitemyer (drums). The ensemble projects a sonically rich, expansive sound on Flora.Fauna.Fervor that fully utilizes the creative abilities of each musician. The album is initially being released on vinyl only by 482 Music, with a digital release to follow. The LP will contain a coupon for a free download of the entire album plus two bonus tracks.

I am very excited to be recording the music I’ve written for the next record which is looking like a double. There are 12 tracks, six of which have singing. Half of the music includes Ben Lewis on piano and Jon Deitemyer on drums while the other half includes Rob Clearfield on piano and Michael Caskey on drums and percussion. Grazyna Auguscik will be featured singing along with myself as I am playing double bass on all the pieces. Almost all of music features members of Eighth Blackbird Ensemble (Tim Munro on flutes, Michael Maccaferri on Clarinets, Nicholas Photinos on cello, and Matthew Duvall on vibraphone and marimba) along with Dominic Johnson on viola, Zack Brock on violins, and James Davis on trumpet and flugelhorn. I’m very excited about this project and am happy to be working with Anthony Gravino at the Drake who is my favorite engineer to work with.

This all started when my good friends Zach and Erin asked me to compose a wedding processional for their wedding a couple summers ago. The creative limitation was to work with the musicians who were going to be at the wedding in Kentucky. Being as I had written for this small orchestra or chamber group once, I decided to elaborate on the instrumentation.

This recording is in the early stages, but look for it later in 2011 sometime. That’s the goal anyway.
