In the Ivory [2014]

Expanding upon the artistic and critical success of his 2012 double album By a Little Light, Chicago bassist-composer Matt Ulery returns with In the Ivory on Dave Douglas’ acclaimed independent label Greenleaf Music – eighty minutes of resplendent, lyrical, transportive, and impeccably performed chamber-jazz music. Inspired and motivated by the musical and personal relationships developed while recording and performing By a Little Light–Ulery’s most ambitious project to date–In the Ivory explores the idea of consciousness through patient, lyrical composition.

At a time when classical musicians perform in clubs almost as frequently as jazz musicians appear in concert halls, Ulery has forged a unique signature sound that combines a jazz core with luminous ensemble writing and song craft. Built around a band of select, unique voices, In the Ivory draws upon Ulery’s positive experience performing Light with this particular thirteen-piece aggregation.

Ulery’s sixth album as a leader blends jazz, American minimalism, Eastern European folk music (as a longtime writing member of Chicago band Eastern Blok), and romanticism into a constantly evolving emotional kaleidoscope.

Wake An Echo [2013]

For his follow-up to the acclaimed By A Little Light [2012], Matt Ulery, sets aside the sprawling grandeur of his large ensemble works without sacrificing the beauty inherent in his compositions, and reimagines his long-standing Loom Quintet on Wake An Echo (his second for Greenleaf Music). With Loom, Ulery expands his voice, continuing to draw on his varied experiences and influences while using well-seasoned personnel to not just perform but inhabit the music he creates.

“These specific instruments and personalities have opened up a new world of orchestration possibilities for me, and are essential to the interest and drama in this music,” Ulery notes, ”ultimately helping lead to an emotional connection between the players and the listeners.”

Marquis Hill — trumpet

Matt Ulery’s ‘Loom’ has been captivating audiences for over 3 years. The first cd release, Music Box Ballerina, has been a long time coming and highly anticipated. Loom, which consists of Thad Franklin on trumpet, Tim Haldeman on tenor saxophone, Jon Deitemyer on drums, Rob Clearfield on accordian and piano, Zach Brock on violin, and Matt Ulery on double bass and compositions, come together on Music Box Ballerina with eight original compositions of Ulery’s which have been a part of the group’s live repitoire for the last year. In addition, the mesmerizing, innovative, Polish jazz singer, Grazyna Auguscik, appears on one track of the album. Ulery has been performing with Auguscik for 3 years all over the U.S. and Europe as well as appearing on her two latest albums. The music, while coming from the American and European jazz tradition, including highly syncopated rhythms, modern jazz harmony, and improvisation, is also influenced by folk music from the Americas and Eastern Europe as well as modern alternative and indie rock bands from all over the world. Ulery’s music has also been described, at times, as cinematic and fanciful. ‘Loom’ is based out of Chicago, IL.Click here to purchase from CD Baby.Matt Ulery's 'Loom' - Music Box BallerinaSample Audio:
